Boomerang connects volunteers with virtual opportunities to collaborate with our partners. Please see below for our current opportunities on how to create positive impact in communities across the world without leaving home.

Partner: Cielo Foundation and Hammock Boutique

Mission: Establish a system of socioeconomic development that can revitalize the local economy, enhance skills and break the cycle of generational poverty in Mayan communities.

Partner Focus Areas: Education (Leadership, Mentorship) and Health

Partner Description: Cielo Foundation (Fundación Cielo) is working to break the cycle of inter-generational poverty in Mayan communities in the Yucatán through an integrated system of socioeconomic development. We are introducing the SHE Network (Sustainable Holistic Empowerment Network) concept on Social Impact and Social Entrepreneurship. Our Sustainability comes from running a profitable hammock business. The Holistic component comes from the integrated approach of not limiting ourselves to provide just jobs but also act in other aspects to help improve their overall living conditions. Our foundation has a strong focus on education.  We believe that education is the best way to make a lasting change and impact on the economic situation of a community. The pilot programs include educational children's activities, a mentorship program for high school students interested in continuing their education, a Health Fair, and community meetings.

Volunteer Focus Areas: Organizational Development, Marketing and Social Media, Program Operations, Design

FILLED -- Opportunity 1: Legal Assistance to register Cielo Foundation as a nonprofit in the U.S. -- FILLED
Cielo Foundation is currently registered as a nonprofit in Mexico. However, in order to access tax-deductible donations and fundraising in the U.S., the organization needs to be registered in the U.S.

Skills Required: Experience registering a nonprofit in the U.S. or related knowledge. Legal background preferred. Nonprofit background helpful.

Time Commitment: 2 - 5 hours per week until the project is completed or until 3 months have passed (at which point project can be handed off or extended).

Opportunity 2: Social media strategy and implementation
Both organizations would benefit from support to develop messaging to help tell their story to audiences. This opportunity would allow the volunteer to connect with the founders of the Cielo Foundation and Hammock Boutiques and share their vision and impact.

Skills Required: Experience developing a social media strategy for a nonprofit or business.

Time Commitment: 2 - 5 hours per week until the project is completed or until 3 months have passed (at which point project can be handed off or extended).

Opportunity 3: Design a lightweight hammock stand
Hammock Boutique exports hammocks across the globe and needs a designer to develop the next version of their hammock stand.

Skills Required: Experience designing furniture, physical products, or an industrial design background.

Time Commitment: 2 - 5 hours per week until the project is completed or until 3 months have passed (at which point project can be handed off or extended).

Opportunity 4: Locate and coordinate the donation of school buses for Cielo Foundation
A significant challenge for rural youth in Mayan villages is transportation to and from school. If the family or village owns an automobile, it often has to be used for other business matters. Public transportation is also expensive and the family’s resources aren’t always spent sending their children to school. The result is poor education if any at all. Cielo Foundation is looking for donated school buses in order to provide transportation for youth in the villages to get to and from school.

Skills Required: Resource development in acquiring gifts-in-kinds, donations for nonprofits.

Time Commitment: 2 - 5 hours per week until the project is completed or until 3 months have passed (at which point project can be handed off or extended).
